#1085 Desert Tree

8"x8" | oil on archival panel

Painted "en plein air" during the 2017 Plein Air Event at Maryhill Museum. It is a little larger than my usual daily paintings, 8"x8". I'm starting the bidding at $100 just like my little 6"x6" paintings.
This is the first time it has been displayed to the public. I didn't enter this painting into the Plein Air Event in August.
I'm not sure what kind of tree this is... maybe a Locust Tree, they are very common in the Oregon and Washington desert. They have an incredibly rough bark.

#1082 Multnomah Falls

This is a small 6"x6" commissioned piece that I completed before the recent extensive forest fires. Multnomah Falls won't be this green again for a while.

#1078 Cannon Beach Tide Pools

5"x8" | pen and ink

During our trip to Cannon Beach, OR, I sketched Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. I was using Staedtler pens 0.5 and 0.7 on multimedia paper. I was 3 stories up looking down on the beach. A beautiful day

#1070 Plum Impression

6"x6" | oil on archival gessoboard

Here are some photos below of my process. It has been way too smoky from wildfires, where I live to be able to paint outside this September. The smoke is so thick it is actually harmful to breathe.
It's ok, because I'm bringing the outside in.

I sketched my composition on the board with a palette knife this time.

My original inspiration, freshly clipped from the tree outside, and hung on the wall so I could get good shadows from the sun shining in the window on the right.

#1067 Garden Rosebush

6"x6" | gouache on illustration board

I have painted this rosebush in front of my house several times with oil paints, so I wanted to give it a try with gouache (a matte water media) on archival illustration board. Gouache has a similiar look to oil paintings but has a very matte finish. I use a varnish especially for watermedia when it is dry.

#1058 Heirloom Tomato

6"x6" | oil on archival panel
I'm trying to get back in the groove of the studio, because of our smoky Pacific Northwest Wildfire events. The smoke is at "harmful levels" so I'll just paint inside. Yes, this is all one weird looking tomato.

#1054 Douglas Fir Tree

6"x6" | oil on archival panel

Same tree, different day! I think it's good to go to the same places to paint. It allows you to time to process what you have painted, and consider different ways of painting the same subject. This was a plein air painting, a demo for the class.

Painted En Plein Air at The Deschutes River in Oregon

#1049 Waiting For Wind - Award Winner!

8"x8" | oil on archival panel

Award Winner in the Human Figure Show at The Dalles Art Center!
Hood River might have a unique "waiting for wind" culture. Kiteboarding and Windsurfing are huge here, and if it's not windy there are a lot of people hanging out just waiting for the wind to pick up.
This painting is for a show called, "Human Figure" at The Dalles Art Center, 220 E 4th St., The Dalles, OR

#1043 Vintage VW 12"x12"

12" x 12" | oil on archival panel

I used the 6"x6" version as a study for this larger painting.
Cars and urban scenes are a fun challenge in many ways, perspective is like a game... getting it all lined up to make sense.
This painting is for the upcoming show at The Dalles Art Center "Summer Color". The show features myself and two artist friends. Cathleen Rehfeld - Oils, Karen Watson - Pastels and Melanie Thompson - Ceramics. Opening Reception Thurs July 5 from 5-7pm, 220 E 4th St, The Dalles,OR (541) 296-4759
