Turquoise Tea Pot and Apples in the Shadow

6"x6" :: Oil on archival panel
The Turquoise Fiestaware Tea Pot looks great with the apples. I was instructing my weekly oil painting class at Columbia Center for the Arts this morning, and this was my demo painting for the class.
Melanie Thompson, a daily painter on Daily Paintworks Website, drove all the way from Richland WA to come to my 3 hr class, at the art center this morning. I love meeting other Daily Painters in person! Thanks Melanie for coming to my class in Hood River, OR!

AND I have had so much fun painting this teapot, my super cool cousin is sending me another cool Fiestaware teapot to paint (it's a very tall blue one), among other colorful random fiesta pieces.

Red Apple and Asian Bowl

6"x6" :: oil on archival panel :: Red Apple and Asian Bowl
I am always working on different concepts with each small painting. Today, I was working on everything. Composition of shapes, light vs dark, intense chroma vs neutrals, variety of brushstrokes…I love this bowl, it's one of my still life inspirations from Uwagimaya in Portland. If you haven't been there, it's worth going.

Fiesta Tea

The Fiestaware makes for some great color combinations. I like combining color complements in my paintings, the blue and orange colors are complementary colors.

Found this cool color combination in the kitchen, alizarin red wine vinegar and a little clementine orange, with an empty teal bottle in the back…

If you aren't familiar with "Artists Helping Artists" Blog Talk Radio Show, hosted by Leslie Saeta, you should be, because her AHA show is a great resource! There are so many talented artists that Leslie has interviewed, it is worth checking out. I was lucky enough for Leslie to ask me if I wanted to be on the show, so here it is in the archives (the live show was on Thursday Nov 15) All of her interviews are conducted "live" with no editing, so all the conversations with artists are refreshingly candid. Leslie is an artist herself, so she knows all the geeky artist questions to ask, that we all want to know!

Olive Oil and Coral Bowl with Italian Plums

6"x6" :: oil on archival panel

Olive oil is a great subject to paint, it has a very warm, foodie-ness about it. I am spending lots of time in the kitchen this time of year…

Something a little different...

4"x4" :: Two Apples :: oil on gesso board with black gesso
Please notice - this painting is only 4 in x 4in, not my usual 6in x 6in size! This is a demo from my class, of a painting exercise that I call Find Your Brushstrokes. I am making this exercise into an ArtByte so that I can share this fun and valuable exercise with artists who would like to make their brushstrokes really work for them. The exercise involves using as few brushstrokes as possible and lots of paint, to make a small painting. It ends up looking sort of like a color Notan, because there are just two values for each object - light and dark.
Hopefully I will get the "Find Your Brushstrokes" Art Byte finished by Monday!

ArtByte Update:
I'm currently working on a new one! I will tell you about it, as soon as I am closer to finishing it - maybe this week... For now, here is information about the 2 ArtBytes I have completed that are on the Daily Paintworks website.  The first one I made is about how to paint your panels with black gesso and it is free.
The second ArtByte is about painting a still life painting on black gesso, and it is $10. This one is newly updated I added some additional info, links, and photos to the original one.

If you don't already know about ArtBytes, each one contains text, images and links to products and more information, DPW has ArtBytes by other artists in the store too. ArtBytes are byte sized online art tutorials. They have concise information, not so long that you will get bored. Once you buy an ArtByte it is yours, you can look at it forever.

Plays Together Well

6"x6" :: Plays Together Well:: oil on archival panel

The pinkish red of the pomegranate and light earthy green of the bowl, just seem to play together so well. You can tell from the brushstrokes, I had some fun with this one.

Hurricane Sandy Donation on Daily Paintworks

DONATION :: Glowing Cup :: 6"x6" :: oil on archival panel

DONATION :: Fiestaware Creamer :: 6"x6" :: oil on archival panel

These two original oil paintings are my donation to the Sandy Relief Effort. If you bid on these paintings, all the money from the painting purchase price (minus shipping to the winning bidder) will be donated to Hurricane Sandy Relief. If you are the winner of the bid, please specify, which organization the money should go to, and I will make sure it goes to that organization. For example indicate Red Cross or whatever organization you want in the notes area of paypal, or send me an email. I am starting the bidding very low, so that whatever the painting sells for, then that amount goes to donation. Even if only $10 goes to an organization, I think it will help.

The Artisté

The Artisté :: 6ft x 3ft
oil on cradled panel :: framed

An artist friend of mine (Mark Nilsson) is leaving the area… so I decided to do a full sized portrait of him before he leaves! It was fun to do a painting that large… 6ft x 3ft, or crazy... anyway it will also be in the Body Language show at Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, OR. Mark and I worked on a mural project together a few years ago for Full Sail Brewing. The mural was 40ft long x 8ft tall. I could never have done anything that large without his help. He does huge paintings and murals all the time. We will miss him greatly! (I'm still hoping maybe he will change his mind and stay!)

Last Roses - sold

Last Roses :: 6"x6" :: oil on panel
According to the weather prediction (if you want to believe it), the rain starts this week! You sure can't tell from today's weather. It was such perfect fall weather - sunny and clear blue sky, 70's in the afternoon… if it is true, then our roses are done until next Spring.

Just Because

6"x6" :: oil on archival panel :: Demitasse and Apple

I just liked the colors of all these objects. The yellow demitasse cup, the green apple and the orange background (with some turquoise peeking through!). It is part of the "visual diary" part of my small paintings, to paint things just because.

The auction is over but you can still purchase this painting - Just Because

Rainbow of Tomatoes - sold

6"x6" :: oil on archival panel :: Rainbow of Tomatoes

Wow, the tomato growers around here (Hood River Oregon) have outdone themselves. These are the best, most colorful tomatoes I have ever eaten. I had to paint them quickly before I ate them all. They are so beautiful. Every color and shape you can imagine - purple, red, orange, lemon yellow, heart shaped, round, tiny ovals…

The Feeling of Far - sold

6"x6" :: oil on linen panel :: The Feeling of Far

A quote from Harvey Penick - "Just let it happen. Don’t try and hit the ball far. Instead develop a feeling that the ball is going to go a long way without your really trying. And sure enough, it will. I call it The Feeling of Far."

It could apply to painting!
I'm not a golfer, but I went plein air painting today with a Portland group of painters, to Heron Lakes Golf Course (to paint). What a pretty, tranquil place to paint.

The auction starts today, Tuesday Sept 4 and ends Tuesday Sept 11, 6pm PDT.

I went out to the Deschutes River today, and I got two paintings out of this session at the river. I wore my cowgirl boots, because there really are rattlesnakes at this desert river site. I don't know if this is rattlesnake time of year, but one can't be too careful… Anyway, there was a beautiful handmade boat (Lamiglas Fish With Confidence) pulled up on the edge of the river in the sand, so I could not resist painting it - as quickly as I could, because you never know when the owners will come back and want to take their boat out fishing! So I got the painting below, finished just in time. The owner was very kind to give me about 5 more minutes to finish the painting. Love the boat, and how the painting turned out too!
